Mayor Cheri Barry has sent a letter to Senators Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker, and Congressman Gregg Harper, asking them to help prevent the closure of the west station Meridian post office, and stop other postal service changes that affect local residents.
Barry says that first and foremost, she is against any measure that would take jobs from the city. The USPS has proposed the closure of over 3,000 post offices across the country, including the west station in Meridian.
"We don’t want to lose anything that we have that would help benefit the citizens of Meridian," says Barry.
Senator Thad Cochran’s office responded to our call about this issue. The Mississippi legislator is a member of the Senate Appropriations committee, and that committee has written a bill aimed at stopping the closure of more than 3,000 post offices nationwide.
Those provisions must still make it onto the final appropriations bill later this year.
