We Millennials understand that there are a lot of well-meaning people out there from the Boomer generation–and even some of the older Gen Xers–who really want to connect to our generation in a political sense. They talk emphatically about reaching the Millennial demographic. “If only we could just educate them on the issues,” they say. “If only we could get them to understand how much the government takes out of their paychecks,” they say. Despite the innumerable “if onlys” they employ, they just can’t seem to get why Millennials are non-responsive.
Well, guess what. I’m here to help. I’ve come up with 9 great things one should NOT say to Millennials, and I give reasons why these phrases are toxic. These are all things I’ve heard–a lot. (I’m not kidding–I’m really wondering if there’s a book out there that tells Boomers to use these lines with my generation.) If there’s one thing Boomers are good at, it’s saying the wrong thing to Millennials. It’s time to put an end to that.
