The Mississippi Alliance for Cannabis wants to legalize the sale of marijuana for medical and recreational use in the state.
Members of the group are hoping to collect the 110,000 signatures needed to put an initiative titled Proposition 48 on the November 2016 ballot.
Posted on the group’s Facebook page is the following motto: “Legalize it. Regulate it. Tax it.”
“I think people should have the right to choose,” the group’s Lauderdale County liaison, Stacey Brown, said. “If they are against it, they need to educate themselves with the facts. Mississippi Alliance wants people to have the facts, not opinion based theories.”
Opponents doubt there is enough support in the state to legalize pot.
“In my opinion, I think it would it would be unlikely to pass even if enough signatures were gathered to have it placed on a ballot,” Mississippi House Rep. C. Scott Bounds, R-Dist. 44, said. “I personally would be against it. I would not sign the petition or vote for it.”
