Elected officials in Warren County say they will publicly apologize to people whose names were incorrectly published on a list of delinquent taxpayers.
The Vicksburg Post reported that Warren County supervisors ran an advertisement in Monday’s newspaper to list people who had failed to pay county taxes on time.
Supervisors said the list was prepared too soon. It included people who had not paid by July 17, even though there was an Aug. 3 payment deadline.
County administrator John Smith said the tax collector’s office received “a large volume of complaints” from people who felt their good names were besmirched.
“The complainers wanted to know what we’re going to do,” Smith said.
The county is buying another newspaper ad to apologize to people whose names were incorrectly put on the overdue list.
One of the supervisors, Richard George, said listing on-time taxpayers as delinquent was “an insult to a person’s reputation by the very body that’s taking your money.”
