Gautier removed the Mississippi state flag from the Veterans Tribute Tower display Wednesday at City Hall and the American Legion put it back up.
The city took the state flag down and replaced it with the city flag after discussing the issue at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting. There was no official vote taken.It was discussed in general as well as during the city manager’s comments portion of the City Council meeting Tuesday night, and on Wednesday, the city took down the state flag from the tower, where eight flags traditionally fly.
About 3 p.m. Wednesday, representatives with the American Legion came to City Hall and switched them back after meeting with the mayor.
The mayor is a member of the American Legion. The organization’s president visited with him, City Manager Samantha Abell said.
“It’s the mayor’s desire that the state flag fly,” Abell said.
