Community members celebrated alongside the governor and lieutenant governor on Tuesday during the grand opening of what many hope will be the saving grace of 121 fifth graders in South Jackson: ReImagine Prep, one of Mississippi’s first ever public charter schools.
The makeup of the school’s inaugural class is 100 percent African American, and a majority qualify for the free and reduced lunch program. About 10 percent of the students are considered special needs students, or have Individualized Education Programs.
Gov. Phil Bryant and Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, who helped pass legislation to pave the way for charter schools, heralded the school as providing much-needed options for students and their families.
