WAPT reports Councilman Ashby Foote has a plan to fix the City of Jackson’s budget crisis by having officers collect millions of dollars in overdue water bills.
“I think if the Police Department shows up to people’s doors to pay their water bills, my guess is the compliance rate will go way up,” Foote said.
According to Foote, the city is due more than $20 million in unpaid utility bills this year.
“The challenge is actually getting all the folks who owe the city to pay those bills and that goes across the city businesses and institutions to individuals,” he said.
What do you think? Is this a proper role for the police?
