Rankin County School District’s decision to prevent the Brandon High School Band from playing the Christian hymn “How Great Thou Art” didn’t stop the school’s fans from sharing praise at last Friday’s season-opening game.
“Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee. How Great Thou art! How great Thou art!” parents and students stood and chanted in protest.
Mississippi PEP, a blog dedicated to “Mississippi’s Conservative Conversation” run by Keith Plunkett, a former campaign staffer for State Sen. Chris McDaniel, posted a video of the impromptu chorus on Aug. 22. The video has over 108,000 views.
Plunkett said he got the video from Candy Sansing, who posted the video on Facebook and has garnered over 265,000 views. He also said the crowd’s actions demonstrate some of the frustrations in the conservative movement.
“Freedom of religion is a first amendment right, and I think it speaks to a lot of the outrage that you’re seeing just through culture in general,” Plunkett said.
