The Senate Education Committee has approved a House bill to ensure teachers get a full pay check for August.

Some worry a new law that takes effect this year mandating that public school districts can start no earlier than the third Monday in August will affect teacher pay.

Teachers have expressed concern that they may not work the required 15 days in August to get a full paycheck.

Senate Education Committee Chairman Gray Tollison said House Bill 71, which was passed Wednesday by his committee, would remedy the situation by saying licensed school district employees shall be paid in equal monthly installments beginning in the first month of employment, regardless of the number of days worked in any particular month by the employee.

“We probably need to be doing this anyway,” Tollison said of paying teachers based on a monthly installment instead of by days worked that month.
